Our Family

Welcome to Tickalara! Let us introduce ourselves. We are the Hurst family - Annie, Emily and Sally. For the last 29 years, we have called Tickalara home, and have worked hard to build the farm into something special in our own corner of the world. We are fortunate that we are able to live and work doing what we love, and we are excited to be able to share this with the world!

Our Story

Tickalara

The name Tickalara is an Aboriginal word referring to an equivalent of heaven. Translated, it means spirit world, or here-after. Back when the farm was first bought as a subdivision from Lerida Station, the name was chosen to fit what we hoped the property would one day be for us. Looking around now, we definitely think the name suits!

Our History

While we first called Tickalara home in 1994, our family have been involved in the cattle game in Australia for 5 generations, and over 100 years.

Walter and Susan Johnson were third generation cattle farmers on the family property of Brigalow, in Yeoval, NSW. This is where Annie and her three brothers were raised. In the 1950s, Walter and his father started Karoola Shorthorns. With Wal at the head, the stud was very successful; showing numerous Royal Show Champions, setting Australian Shorthorn sale price records, importing some of the first live bulls from the USA, and establishing Karoola as a renown Shorthorn herd. This continued until the early 1970s when Karoola was dispersed and sold. Thankfully for us, there were a great number of photos of the farm and the cattle that were raised - something we love being able to look back on.

Being able to purchase Tickalara, farm the land and build our own stud herd was something that we are extremely proud of.
